The VisiWeb passenger counting sensor is the latest generation of this type of sensor, which has been specially developed for counting the numbers of passengers on public transport.
The VisiWeb passenger counting sensor consists of a stereoscopic camera system, an integrated power supply for either 24/36 V DC or 110 V DC, and a powerful computer, which processes images in real time. The newly designed sensor unit is extremely compact and can be installed fully recessed in a ceiling panel so that all passengers see are two small, round covers.
The principle
Unlike with traditional sensors, a 3D image of the area around the doors is generated. The height of all the scanned objects, for instance, can then be determined based on this image. This process enables individual people to be detected very reliably even when there are a lot of passengers present.
The sensor is easy to install and the fact that it offers fully recessed mounting means there is little visible surface area for vandals to damage.The sensor can be used to cover an entrance area of up to 5 m wide, with only one sensor required per door. The sensors work autonomously and retain their count data even if a power failure occurs. They feature an IP interface, so they can be connected directly to the assigned switch on the Ethernet backbone.The count data stored in the sensors can be read out via the Ethernet backbone at any time (once the doors have been closed, for example).
In the solution offered here, the data is read out by the PIS computer, which adds other necessary information to it and makes it available in a data format to be defined by the operator, ready to be offloaded (e.g., via GSM or WLAN).
The 3D scanning process means that individual people are always detected with a high degree of reliability. The camera images can also be recorded in video format and used as evidence to back up the scanned results at a later date, thus making expensive manual counts superfluous.
